An Open-Lineage, Live Training Experience
Looking forward to another great event this year!
Women of Wing Chun are Welcome!
Wing Chun Lab is designed with the support and growth of all participants (varying levels of skill, sparring experience, power, size, etc.) in mind. There are many women sincerely committed to martial arts training. We completely understand the hesitation that some might feel when it comes to stepping outside of your home school to attend a training event, especially a sparring event. In an effort to create a more inclusive training environment, we're offering a few free passes to women only for the upcoming event.
Don't train Wing Chun, but still want to join the fun? We Got You!
VOLUNTEER and PAID Sparring Positions Available!
EVENT DETAILS
What?
At our 2022 Wing Chun Lab, participants from 8 different lineages came together to test and refine our skills under live pressure (scroll down to see photos). Everyone walked away feeling tired and inspired, with tons of food for thought...and maybe a minor bruise or two. ;) We've put together an even bigger and better event for the upcoming Wing Chun Lab on October 7, 2023!
Wing Chun Lab is a ground-breaking open-lineage full-day live training experience offering a rare opportunity to test and refine your Wing Chun skills in a series of dynamic pressure drills and sparring rounds with martial artists from various styles. This is not a seminar where you will be taught someone else's interpretation of Wing Chun. Nor is this an open Chi Sau gathering where you focus solely on exploring Wing Chun vs. Wing Chun. While these kinds of events can offer excellent opportunities for growth, Wing Chun Lab provides an innovative live training platform for you to put your unique set of acquired skills to the test in a challenging, organized, and supportive training environment. Let's unite as one Wing Chun family and support each other in exploring ways to effectively use 詠春 Wing Chun against other common approaches to fighting.
Who?
This event is open to any adult (18+) who has practiced 詠春拳 Wing Chun Kuen (and its various spellings) and is ready to make a leap forward in personal growth. This event is open to all lineages and is designed to be a challenging and rewarding experience for all experience levels.
All participants must supply their own protective gear. Protective gear makes sparring "safer". However, any activity that includes the possibility of injury, including head trauma, is not completely safe. There is an inherent risk of mild or severe injury in all contact sports. The following items are REQUIRED. You will not be allowed to participate if you are missing any of the required gear listed below (no exceptions). For added protection, we recommend that you also wear the "Optional" gear listed below.
REQUIRED PROTECTIVE GEAR
* Headgear is optional during light contact rounds but will be required during designated periods of heavier contact training. Headgear will reduce the chances of superficial damage such as cuts, bruises, ear damage, black eyes, etc. Headgear dulls the impact of strikes but does not completely prevent concussions or other head trauma.
How?
The entire day is spent testing skills against uncooperative, unpredictable opponents. You'll partner with fellow Wing Chun artists and people who train in various martial arts. Most of the day will be light or medium contact only, with a few opportunities for heavy contact for those interested in increasing the intensity. All participation is voluntary and participants can choose to engage at your preferred contact level. This means that even if you choose to engage in light contact only, you will still be able to participate throughout the entire event. We'll train in a non-competitive, self-guided learning environment.
Everyone comes with whatever skills they have earned so far and enters this event on equal ground. No titles or ranks; we're all students of the art looking to expand our horizons. Our innovative system of peer coaching will take the place of any person playing the role of an instructor. Throughout the event, participants will have both informal and structured opportunities to exchange insights and tips with other participants.
Why?
Here's a rare opportunity to unite with a positive, supportive community of Wing Chun artists from many lineages and locations as we support each other in testing and refining our diverse understandings and practical applications of 詠春拳 Wing Chun Kuen. You'll get realistic, real-time feedback by using Wing Chun with training partners of various experience levels whose understanding and practical application of fighting skills may be similar or vastly different from your own. This includes opportunities to assess your skills against people who have trained in other martial arts and have little or no experience in Wing Chun.
Where?
This event will be held at the Edgewood Arts Center in Washington, DC. We may be able to help out-of-town participants arrange a discounted group hotel rate.
When?
Wing Chun Lab will take place on Saturday, October 7, 2023! This is a full day of dynamic martial arts training! As we know, timing is a key factor in martial arts. The opportune time to get on board with this event is NOW! There's no event like this out there (go ahead and look…we’ll wait lol). Our previous Wing Chun Lab was a phenomenal event and this year's Lab promises to be an even better growth opportunity for any student of the art who wants to live test their skills and expand their view of 詠春 Wing Chun.
Space is limited. Make this investment in your growth by securing your spot!
